The better prepared your enquiry, the faster and more accurate your CNC machining quote comes back. Most delays are not caused by a busy shop, but by missing information — and the back-and-forth it triggers. Below is a short list of what to prepare so the first reply is specific straight away.
What really drives the price of a CNC part
- geometry and complexity (number of operations, set-ups)
- material (price and machinability)
- tolerances and surface finish (the tighter, the more expensive)
- quantity (one-off vs series)
- surface treatment (anodising, zinc plating, painting)
- lead time
What to prepare for the quote
1. 3D model — preferably in a neutral format such as STEP (.stp/.step) or IGES. It lets us assess the solid, the material volume and the machining strategy.
2. 2D drawing with tolerances — wherever accuracy is required. Mark critical dimensions, tolerances, fits, surface finish and datums. This is the most important document for precision parts.
3. Material — the grade (e.g. stainless steel 1.4301, aluminium 6082, brass), and if you are unsure — a description of the application.
4. Quantity and outlook — 1 piece, 50, or a recurring series. This changes the technology and the unit price.
5. Deadline and 6. surface treatment — if the part is to be anodised, zinc plated or painted.
File formats
- Best: STEP / IGES (3D) + PDF or DWG (2D drawing)
- Acceptable: native CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor)
- Not enough for precision: a photo/sketch alone — fine for a first conversation, not for quoting a part with tolerances
The most common gaps that delay a quote
- a 3D model without a 2D drawing (no tolerances)
- “it must be accurate” without a stated tolerance
- undefined material or quantity
- no information about surface treatment
Frequently asked questions (FAQ)
In what format should I send the model?
Preferably STEP or IGES (3D) plus a 2D drawing in PDF/DWG with tolerances.
Will you quote from a photo alone?
Roughly yes, but for a reliable quote of a part with requirements we need a model and/or a drawing.
Do I have to know the material grade?
No — if you describe the application and working conditions of the part, we will select the material.
Is the quote paid?
No — preparing a quote based on documentation is free of charge.
Have a project to quote? Send the model and drawing — we will reply with a specific quote and lead time. Send an enquiry or see the full CNC offer.
